Retribution~

This poem bagged SECOND SUCCESSIVE GOLD Blog-a-Ton Batom  !!

This post has been published by me as a part of the Blog-a-Ton 34; the thirty-fourth edition of the online marathon of Bloggers; where we decide and we write. To be part of the next edition, visit and start following Blog-a-Ton. The theme for the month is "Of-Course, I'm insane"

"Of-course, I am insane”
‘A blood thirsty terrorist’
who smeared the earth with blood
Now, lying in the grave, fatigued...
With no headstones, epitaphs
Waiting to get decayed…
Like a dead skin of a snake
Under heaps of unwanted scraps
Intrepid sounds and smells of memory
Fill me with pity and disgust
‘I am myself and my circumstances….’

Not even a maggot would
Grow out of my debris
The pages are a testimony
With guns, blood-shed, grenades
I numbed many hearts lurking in the dark
Confronting spasms of hatred,
My soul changed tracks since then
We have grown apart...
sharing neither anxieties, nor sins
‘I am myself and my circumstances…’

Shivering beneath the wintery nights
Like a dismembered animal
I realize, this is not a story of a hero
But, merely the narrative of a cynic,
Of a nasty man, silenced to death at last
Though an awakening seems ridiculous now;
But, ….‘Silence is a great healer’
Civilization covers up uncomfortable silences
The damp earth is giving way
The grass springing back in its wake
allow me to emerge as a good human being!
‘I am myself and my circumstances…’

[After all, repentance speaks louder than words….]

"There have been occasions of silencing of nature, including our very own human nature, and we need to let this silence break and speak…..”—Martin Heidegger—

‘I am myself and my circumstances….’---  Famous existentialist, Ortega y Gasset proposes that philosophy must overcome the limitations of both idealism (in which reality is centered around the ego) and ancient-medieval realism (in which reality is located outside the subject) in order to focus on the only truthful reality (i.e., "my life" — the life of each individual). He suggests that there is no me without things and things are nothing without me: "I" (human being) cannot be detached from "my circumstances" (world). This led Ortega y Gasset to pronounce his famous maxim "Yo soy yo y mi circunstancia" ("I am I and my circumstance") (Meditaciones del Quijote, 1914) which he always placed at the core of his philosophy—source from wiki!!

    1. Amen Tania....mob celebrating the death of the sinner and not the sin sounds 'Barbaric' to me. Maybe, he deserved that death---but, I hated the cheering that followed after his death.
But truly this poem is reflection of my thoughts after I saw the news!!

  10. Ahh that ripped my heart out!! Yes, his final words were indeed his confession to God about the big mistake he committed. And I feel and agree with you that silence does heal. And repentance speaks louder than words. I hated him wanted him dead for all those who died and all those who lost their close ones on 26/11, but repentance does one more thing. Earns forgiveness.

  49. I could never have any sympathy for a terrorist. Neither could I enjoy death penalty, though it was just in my opinion. Justice was done. For me, it's like a job finally done. Death, whether by a terrorist's gun or on the gallows, is not something to rejoice. Both the terrorist and the hangman meant business. That's it.

As for ‘Silence is a great healer’, I wish our Prime Minister's silence also had that healing touch. Sadly, the silence of our PM betrays a soft underbelly of the powers-that-be of this nation.

lafzon ke zakhm aur khamoshi ka marham... bahut khoob.

    1. Ashwini, I am happy you don't agree with my viewpoints herein... for my arguments are incomplete in any case. This could be a never-ending debate and could go on and on and on...I belong to the camp of peace and affirm a criminal's soul must also rest in peace. Frankly, I hated the ugly celebration that followed and revolved around that capital punishment; it was an obnoxious display of barbarism!!Please forgive me if i sound irrational, but this is what i felt so had to tell you.
And about our PM...Well,he is unable to speak because he fears losing his seat. The case is totally different ... wow, when i read my own comment, i sound so gullible! LOL

    2. Well, I guess people are so enamoured by what you write that you are flooded with praise. In fact, I also enjoy reading your posts. But, I try to resist getting swayed by the author's views and look at the issue from another perspective. This is usually the case with me.

If we call our society a civilized one, this is plain narcissism. You read newspapers and not a single day passes with news of heinous crimes perpetrated by the members of our society. So, such obnoxious and ostentatious display of celebration is what one can easily expect. Worse, we have a section of society pasting posters on the walls declaring the hanged terrorist as their latest martyr(This happened in the geographical territory of India & not in Pakistan or any other nation).

The point about PM's silence was that silence does not always heal. I think it only preempts the wounds that spoken words are capable of inflicting.

Keep writing in this vein. I'll keep bumbling like this.

  56. I'll not repeat what most other commentors have already done (of which I read only some) - i.e. praise you, though I have some of it as well.
Insanity and terrorism, I guess one can put those words as synonyms. You begin with the theme and quickly go onto something else. I don't see "insane" anywhere else in the whole thing--even the very blindungsroman of the ghost is very human like, very sane. Of course, this is only from the point of view of the theme.

"I'm me and my circumstance" - On this note, I feel like sharing something I've been researching lately--"origins of language". This is one of the unsolved problems in science, we are not able to figure out how language originated. One of the most puzzling things in this entire strand of research is how can something like 'Words', which are essentially highly unreliable, ever have caught on. Caught on, so damn well. I share this, 'coz it amuses me to make a jump from this research of mine to the philosophical sophistry that you attempt to put forth--"I'm me and my circumstance" [Words have come such a long way].
I'm not going to research this much (atleast not right now), but kindly allow me query you. What does 'circumstance' imply--the entire context? or a accumulation of all contexts (things) thus far in one's life? I can't bring myself to accept that there is one overwhelming and overpowering single (or a bunch of) 'circumstance'(s) that defines a person; although that's definitely the way a person is perceived [as this insane terrorist of yours, who very sanely repents]

Insanity and terrorism are synonyms . Are they ? Are they defined - as words - from the same context ? Or , do they have independent circumstantial existence ? The answer is yes , a resounding "yes". Bhagat Singh , was he insane ? Would one label him a "terrorist" because he was "insane" ; or the epithet could have been for an altogether different reasons ? He was a hero or a terrorist depending on one's context and ideology. Reverse logic holds good as well. As a matter of fact , linking two words originating from two different circumstances , I understand , was dominant , and I suspect it still is , in western colonial culture. To-day , however , there are challenges to these disciplinary conventions of literary criticism and academic philosophy by focusing on the cultural texts of those people who are often marginalized : the working class , women , the post-colonial subject and the new immigrant. On how I "quickly got into something else" , I could only mention : " That was precisely the point ". I got into something else to avoid tyranny of 'synonyms' ; to examine and posit the words in their proper cultural 'circumstances'. Any attempt to discern the effects of colonial legacies to the way we think about contemporary cultural objects and everyday life needs a very complex language and style. I have neither. Therefore , the verse and the deviation.
Thanks a lot for being here and for your comment.

    2. Na, thanks to you. I firmly believe that there are only two consequences to anything endeavour one undertakes in life: one either Wins or Learns; and either is very acceptable to me. With you, I believe it is going to be mostly of the latter, simply because you have the advantage of time on your side. Note, I used 'mostly'.

Your poem is narrated by the slain terrorist--I fail to understand (accept) why he/she is speaking within the 'circumstance' of his/her (the "I" goes for a toss here) victims. Yeah, that's a mere POV difference.

      Anyway, PEACE. :D

    3. Yes, indeed, I always learn...(how wonderful! Learning/ knowledge/epistemology/epistemic violence...omg, there I go back to my protagonist through textual associataion), and I learn not because of ample redundant time on hand (after all home making is as good as idle bird-watching); one 'learns' to live,to be a 'good human being'also, unknownshree! According to you, "I" went for a toss. I concede. After all, text and the world beyond are always in binary opposition.
I agree that we should call it a day, but before adios, I refer to some lines from 'The eleventh thesis of Feuerbach'----"The philosophers have only ever interpreted the world, the point however is to change it."
      Thanks :D
